YOU CHAK KEUY

Also known as you tiao or fried dough sticks are golden brown deep fried sticks of dough, with a super fluffy inside and a crispy exterior. Commonly eaten with porridge or with soy bean for breakfast or even as a snack.

Super easy to make and super fun to get the kids involved as well. Easy fried dough sticks that your kids, friends and family will love.

Ingredients

  1. 3 Cups of All Purpose Flour

  2. 1 Cup of Water

  3. 1tb of Oil

  4. 1te of Salt

  5. 1tb of Baking Powder

  6. 1/4te of Baking Soda

  7. 1 Egg

  8. Oil for Frying

STEPS

  1. In a large bowl combine 3 cups of all purpose flour, 1te of salt, 1 tablespoon of baking powder and 1/4 teaspoon of baking soda.

  2. Crack in 1 egg and 1tb of oil and slowly mix into the flour.

  3. Slowly drizzle in 1 cup of water while mixing to form a rough dough. It will be a very wet and sticky dough. Knead enough to bring the dough together and add a bit of flour if its too sticky and hard to work with.

  4. Coat the dough with a bit of oil and let it rest over night in the fridge.

  5. Roll the dough out into a sheet about 0.3cm thick

  6. Divide the dough into 32 pieces.

  7. Stack 2 pieces of dough on top of each other.

  8. Using a chop stick gently press down the center of the dough stack to combine and create a slight separation.

  9. Stretch the dough to your desired length I went for small cute ones (about 10cm in length) Usually they stretch out to 20cm but you will need to double the dough if you want 20cm sticks.

  10. In a pot of oil heated on high, gently drop your dough into the oil and watch it puff up. Fry till golden, should not take longer than 1 minute.

  11. Let it drain and cool and you got yourself a fried dough stick.

Extra: Remember the separation you created with the chopstick? Now you can pull apart your dough stick into 2 and share it with someone. Chop some up and enjoy over a hot bowl of porridge.

Happy Cooking,
